So, what is web 2.0? The World Wide Web has come a long way. In the beginning, the web was basically a compilation of online brochures that were read-only. We now refer to this phase as Web 1.0. Through the years, technology advanced and Web 2.0 allowed us to interact with the website we visit and each other. The internet took on a more user-friendly look and feel. The development of many social media networks are part of the Web 2.0 revolution. It is time to take it to the next step, developing a semantic web. The semantic web is slowly emerging and becoming known as Web 3.0.

Web 3.0 will make the everyday tasks that are done on the internet easier. There are many ways this system is already being used. Smart phones use your location to recommend nearby restaurants. Some processes that used to take several steps online now take place automatically. Look at Twitter, for example. When you post a tweet, you can have it automatically post onto your Facebook page as well. In one step you get your message out onto two different social media sites.

So what is Web 2.0?

The Web 3.0 definition has been thrown around for several years. Tim Berners-Lee, the “Father of the Web”, calls Web 3.0 the Semantic Web. It combines information about internet users from several sources in order to make their web experience very personal.

Take a look at this scenario. You are looking for a place to go on vacation. Currently, you would think about where you want to travel. Then you would start browsing several sites in order to find airfare, a hotel, and vacation activities. When Web 3.0 is in full force, it will do all of the work for you. Your past searches, the places and activities you have liked on social sites, cities and restaurants your friends have recommended, and much more can come into play when bringing you extremely personalized search results. Many say experiencing Web 3.0 will be like having a personal assistant.

One main concern regarding Web 3.0 is its level of privacy. With such an intricate system, could someone look up what we have been doing on the web? What type of safeguards will businesses put into place to keep our information safe. Only time will tell.

Internet Marketers need to be ready for the Web 3.0 revolution. Many marketers rely heavily on SEO to gain new visitors, customers, and clients. Some people keep a very close eye on the SERPS for a number of specific keywords. In time, search results could be based on the person searching as much as on the keyword entered. Two people could type the same keyword and get different results. What does this mean for you? How can you start preparing for these changes now?
